THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK HOLMES
by
Dick Caron
In this text adventure, you see the
world of late 19th Century London
through the eyes of a 15-year old
waif, Toby Stubbins. You are not an
ordinary street urchin, however;
you're part of the information network
that connects the great detective,
Sherlock Holmes, with London's
underworld.
But as you arrive outside of Holmes'
Baker Street apartment, you embark on
an adventure that will test every bit
of your street smarts-- Sherlock
Holmes has been kidnapped. Supplied
with a single clue by the distraught
Dr. Watson, you must find and save
your patron from a horrible fate.

Text adventure aficianados will
probably find THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK
HOLMES to be a unique experience--
most adventures are filled with
descriptions such as:
"You are at an intersection. There
are exits to the north, south, east,
and west."
and require you to continually type in
the direction you want to move. Your
character moves around in the created
world like a piece in a board game--
one step at a time.
THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK HOLMES takes
a different, more intuitive, approach
to moving your character around its
world. This adventure supplies you
with a list of "verbs" and "modifiers"
that you use to create two word
commands.
Thus, unlike other adventure games,
making a map of the surroundings isn't
really necessary-- if you want to go
to Cheapside (London's shopping
district), you may get there in a
flash by typing in "go cheapside."
You must remember, however, that you
sometimes cannot skip every point
between your location and destination.
If you want to "go smokeshop", you
must first "go cheapside". The same
advice applies when you want to
manipulate objects-- if you want to
open a chest, you must first "go
chest".
Obviously, THE SEARCH FOR SHERLOCK
HOLMES requires familiarity with it's
command list. Fortunately, you may
view this list at any time by entering
"go list". In any case, learning the
list is a small price to pay to enter
a world as intriguing as this one!
